Hair loss test: which one is right for you?

Before treatment, it helps to know the cause. We compare the genetic DNA test, blood analysis and trichoscopy so you can make an informed choice.

When more hair than usual stays on the brush or the hairline thins, the first sensible step is to find out the cause rather than immediately trying medicines. Hair loss tests help distinguish hereditary (androgenetic) alopecia from nutrient deficiency, hormonal disorders or temporary stress-related shedding. Each cause has a different solution, so accurate diagnostics are the foundation of all further treatment.

The three main hair loss tests

1. Genetic DNA test (TrichoTest)

A genetic test analyses your DNA and assesses 28 markers linked to androgenetic alopecia and drug response. It shows not only whether you have a hereditary predisposition, but also which active ingredients — such as minoxidil or finasteride — are likely to suit your genetic profile. The sample is taken at home with a cheek swab, without any blood draw.

2. Blood analysis

A blood test helps confirm or rule out general causes: iron deficiency, thyroid problems, vitamin D deficiency or hormonal imbalance. It does not, however, reveal hereditary predisposition or which medicine suits your genes.

3. Trichoscopy

Trichoscopy is a magnified visual examination of the scalp and follicles. It describes the effect rather than the cause and does not predict treatment effectiveness.

Which test should you choose?

The most common cause of hair loss in both men and women is androgenetic alopecia. For assessing this cause and personalising treatment, the genetic TrichoTest is the most useful. Often the tests work best together, and it is important to start early.

How the genetic test works in practice

A sampling kit is sent to your home, you return it for free and a personalised report is ready within 3–4 weeks. Read more on how it works or see the test price.
